What Is Special About The Amazonite Gemstone?
Remarkable for its fascinating bluish-green color, amazonite is a gem that often finds its place in modern jewelry designs, especially those made to leave a long-lasting impression of uniqueness. For centuries, amazonite has been prized for its allure and healing properties, which, believe it or not, have particularly contributed to the international popularity it enjoys today. Beyond a shadow of a doubt, the amazonite gemstone has a lot to offer, so stay tuned to learn what makes it as admired and desired as it is.
Amazonite is a feldspar gemstone, mostly recognizable for its tropical rainforest green color. However, it occurs in other colors too, including blue, purple and gray. In rare cases, amazonite can be also found multicolored. Its level of hardness ranks between 6 and 6.5 Mohs, meaning that it is a solid rock, although not the most durable one, like moissanite or diamond, for example. The transparency of amazonite can be both translucent and opaque, depending on the type and amount of inclusions there are within the stone. As for the luster, it is commonly described as “vitreous”. Besides the waxy shine, the second major characteristic that makes amazonite distinctive in appearance is the mottled, grid-like pattern which often combines green and white. To see the real the beauty of the amazonite gemstone, you need to see it under soft, not very intense daylight. In other words, just before sunset and shortly after sunrise.
WHAT MAKES AMAZONITE GREEN?
For quite a long time, it was believed that it was copper the main responsible for amazonite’s green look, based on the fact that copper compounds often feature blue and green hues. Later on, another interesting theory was developed, claiming that the amazonite gemstone gets green because of the traces of water into its composition. The real reason? It is all because of the iron impurities. They cause the green color; the higher their presence, the more saturated the green color of the stone. What about the white spots that are a true hallmark of amazonite’s beauty? What are they and how they occur? Here is the answer, as simple and quick as you expect it - these white spots occur as a result of albite, another feldspar mineral with a pearly-white color. They grow within the crystal structure of amazonite, thus blending with its basic green color and forming a color pattern that no other gemstone has. Much to your surprise, the presence of white streaks of color does not have a negative impact on amazonite’s price and value. Instead, the more they are, the higher the quality of the stone.

However, deposits of amazonite do exists in Brazil, only not in the Amazon River. Today, amazonite is mined in several locations in the world, including Russia, Madagascar, Australia, Brazil and USA (Virginia and Colorado).
